Senior Tax Counsel

Global FinTech company is hiring a Senior Tax Counsel based in New York. This is a new position that will be responsible for researching, analyzing and advising on complex and varied domestic and international tax questions. You will work closely with Finance/Tax and senior management to maintain and enhance firm's tax structure and keep up to date on changes to federal, state, and international tax law to assist in proactively planning for necessary changes. You will assist in the maintenance of an optimized tax structure for the firm, review and negotiate the tax provisions in business agreements and draft internal memoranda regarding tax analysis and tax positions.


  • Advice on entity structuring in new geographies and for new business lines
  • Research tax implications stemming from remote work, both domestically and internationally
  • Optimizing the firm’s worldwide tax structure as it continues to expand globally by maximizing foreign tax credits and minimizing tax leakage
  • Researching multi-state operations and their impact on the firm’s overall tax position 
  • Maintaining independence between the firm’s C-Corp / Partnership structure
  • Coordinate and effectively communicate with colleagues, internal and external stakeholders to ensure appropriate tax planning, risk controls, and compliance
  • Review current and potential tax legislation and regulations; and develop policies and procedures relevant to the businesses, including attention to reputational risk considerations


  • JD, additional LLM in Tax is a plus
  • 15+ years of experience in federal tax law, international experience is a plus
  • Experience working in a senior capacity in-house 
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and be self-directed in managing assignments
  • Ability to think broadly and respond quickly when incidents arise and to engage appropriate stakeholders
  • Ability to research and synthesize rules and provide a reasoned assessment of tax risk and propose solutions when there is no clear answer
  • Adept at developing interpersonal relationships and working as a member of a team
  • Strong drafting and excellent written and verbal communication skills
