This firm is looking for their first Tax Accountant to join their Accounting team and report directly to the Chief Financial Officer. The Tax position will have primary review responsibility for investment partnership and SPV’s tax compliance work. The candidate should have a good background in understanding various types of alternative investment fund structures, JVs, SPVs and tax knowledge including but not limited to loan origination, distressed debt, OID, bond netting, bond market discount/premium, constructive sales, qualified dividend analysis, straddles, 1256 contracts, swaps, flow through K-1s, partnership tax allocations, state apportionments and withholdings. Knowledge and exposure to direct lending, unrelated business taxable income, effectively connected income, and foreign investment in real property tax is a plus.
Responsibilities will include:
Review tax workpapers from the Tax advisors supporting returns and allocation statements (i.e. K-1, PFIC) reporting for investors in the funds
Collaborate with external Tax advisors in recording of the proper classifications of corporate actions/reorganizations
Monitor and process specific lot relief on maximizing tax efficiency on daily trades.
Complete ad hoc or recurring reporting (i.e. FATCA, FBAR , ASC 740 analysis, etc.)
Review tax allocations, book-to-tax adjustments, state apportionment and withholding tax computation for investment partnerships, SPVs and JVs
Review federal and state income tax returns for partnerships and corporations
Prepare and review quarterly SPV income tax projections, accruals and tax estimates
Prepare tax payment requests and organize tax filing calendar
Monitor internal and external tax deliverable deadlines and set up priorities on various assignments
Respond to various investor requests on various exposures (i.e. ECI, UBTI, etc.)
Establish contacts and work as a point person with outside tax administrators and accounting firms for timely releasing of the K1s and filing of all tax returns
Skills and Requirements
Bachelor’s degree, CPA preferred
1-3 years of partnership and corporation tax experience in public accounting or equivalent with concentration in the financial services sector (i.e. hedge funds, private equity funds, SPV partnerships, blockers and securities taxation)
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to gather, organize, and illustrate ideas clearly and concisely
Project management and tax research skills
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with ability to identify issues and errors
Proficient Excel knowledge and comfortable with systems and technology
Attention to detail, well organized, and demonstrate commitment to accuracy
Ability to drive a process independently and achieve desired results in a timely manner
Ability to thrive under pressure
